De Sakai: A Unique Japanese Blacksmith Experience in Sakai, Osaka

Japanese Knives

Looking for an experience that’s a cut above the rest? In the heart of Sakai, Osaka, a city famed for its centuries-old blade-making tradition, you will find De Sakai, a rare opportunity to get hands-on with the time-honoured craft of Japanese blacksmithing.

This one-of-a-kind experience blends tradition, craftsmanship, and a little bit of muscle. Led by Eric Chevallier, a French artisan who swapped croissants for katanas, De Sakai invites curious souls to roll up their sleeves and dive into the centuries-old craft of Japanese blade making, right where it all began.

At the helm of De Sakai is Eric Chevallier, a French craftsman who fell in love with Japan’s blacksmithing legacy and made it his life’s work. After years of intensive training under a master blacksmith in Sakai, Eric has become a true ambassador of the craft—dedicated to preserving and sharing it with the world. Fluent in French, English, and Japanese, he has a knack for bridging cultures, blending traditional techniques with heartfelt storytelling. Whether you are a history buff, a creative soul, or just curious, Eric’s warm guidance makes De Sakai an unforgettable experience.

Discover the Art of Japanese Blacksmithing

Housed in a 200-year-old building and filled with tools older than some countries, De Sakai isn’t just a workshop, it’s a time machine with fire and steel. Visitors can witness the authentic blacksmithing process or get hands-on forging traditional items like incense holders and candle stands.

From the clang of metal to the flicker of the forge, every moment at De Sakai tells a story of heritage, precision, and craftsmanship passed down through generations.

After a few months of rest, De Sakai is firing up its forge once again. “Hi-ire”, the ceremonial fire-starting, marks the seasonal reopening this June 2025. Hands-on blacksmithing sessions will resume then, but spots are limited and high in demand, so it is recommended to book at least one month in advance.
