2 Days
Aomori Prefecture, the northernmost region of Japan’s main island, offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s a true utopia for travellers seeking an authentic Japanese summer in the deep countryside, where untouched nature, fresh seafood, and warm hospitality come together in perfect harmony.
Getting there is easier than you might expect: Aomori is just three hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen or about 90 minutes by plane. It’s the perfect gateway to experience the hidden charms of Japan.
This Japan Navi Journey exclusive—“Aomori Summer: Create Your Own Story”—is more than just a tour. It’s a truly private experience, limited to one group per day (up to six people), designed to let you craft a journey that’s uniquely yours. Travel in comfort by private car with an English-speaking guide, ensuring a seamless and in-depth exploration of Aomori’s hidden gems. Enjoy unmatched value and authentic moments you simply won’t find on a typical group tour.
The magic of a Japanese summer lies in the contrast between its vibrant festivals and the peaceful moments spent in untouched nature. On this tour, you will get exclusive access to Aomori’s world-famous Nebuta Festival, one of Japan’s three great fire festivals, while also experiencing the serene landscapes and quiet charm of the Satoyama countryside.
Don’t just watch, put on a special Haneto costume and dance alongside the locals. Feel the rhythm, energy, and joy of the festival with your whole body in this immersive experience.
Step into the normally off-limits Nebuta production site. It’s a powerful, emotional moment to witness the artisans’ soulful creations up close, and to feel the passion and tradition passed down through generations.
Sit back and enjoy the climactic finale as the entire town comes alive with lights and sound. From this prime viewing spot, take in the living traditional culture of Nebuta with all five senses.
For your lodging, you will stay in a traditional Japanese house located in a quiet village in Tsuruta-machi, western Aomori. This beautifully preserved home is built with an abundance of Aomori Hiba, a premium wood unique to the region, some of which is over 300 years old. The calming scent and warmth of the wood create a soothing atmosphere, much like the experience of forest bathing.
Staying here during this season is a rare privilege, and even locals in Japan often find it difficult to book. This exclusive accommodation, arranged especially for this tour, offers a truly luxurious stay found nowhere else.
In contrast to the excitement of the festival, the second day offers a soothing experience where you can fully immerse yourself in Aomori’s tranquility and beautiful nature—lakes, shrines, Japanese gardens, rice paddy art, and more. It helps you slow down and enjoy your trip.
This trip is not just a way to enjoy a festival or escape the summer heat. It offers a deep connection with the authentic culture of regional Japan, warm interactions with local people, and a chance to savour the pristine Japanese summer scenery to your heart’s content, providing unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.
Day
01
Embark on a journey to Japan’s summer festivals, immersed in heat and light, where you can not only see but truly dive into the experience.
The trip begins at a popular local restaurant, where you will enjoy a scallop fishing experience followed by lunch. Fresh seafood, landed that very morning in Aomori Bay, is beautifully presented. Aomori is especially famous for its scallops, and you can savour their simple yet luxurious flavour that highlights the natural umami of the ingredients.
Step behind the scenes of the Nebuta Festival. First, you will try on the colourful costumes worn by the Haneto dancers who leap and dance through the festival. With vibrant yukata robes, swinging bells, and tightly tied obi, the moment you put them on, your mind will instantly switch to “festival mode.” This special experience is sure to become an unforgettable memory.
Next, visit the Nebuta production site. Seeing the giant lanterns handcrafted by artisans over several months will be jaw-dropping, making it hard to believe they are made from paper and bamboo. Observing the delicate brushwork and three-dimensional shapes up close reveals that the festival is not just a celebration, but a true work of art.
As the sun sets, get ready as the festival reaches its climax. The whole town is illuminated by the lights of the Nebuta, and as the giant floats begin to move, the powerful sounds of drums and flutes, along with the spirited calls of “Rassera!” echo into the night sky. Feel this excitement with your whole body from your exclusive seating spot. This is truly a living traditional culture to be experienced with all five senses. Experience the passion and pride the people of Aomori have for their festivals, and immerse yourself in the true essence of the Japanese summer.
After basking in the enthusiastic afterglow of the festival, we head to your accommodation. You will have exclusive use of an entire traditional Japanese house located in a quiet village in Tsuruta Town, western Aomori Prefecture.
Day
02
The day after the lively festival is one of relaxation and calm to rejuvenate your mind and body. Enjoy a special time touring Aomori’s beautiful scenery, history, and unique art.
In the morning, head to Tsuru-no-Mai Bridge, which forms an elegant arc over the lake with Mount Iwaki in the background. It is the longest wooden triple-arched bridge in Japan, and its charm lies in how its appearance changes with the time of day and season. It is especially stunning in the early morning, when mist hangs over it, making it a perfect spot for Instagram posts.
The next stop is the nationally famous Rice Field Art. Different types of rice are planted to create giant pictures across the fields. From the observation deck, the vast rice fields unfold like a magnificent painting. The theme changes every year, and the art, carefully created by local people, features subjects such as anime characters and traditional performing arts. It stands as a symbol of Aomori’s creativity and love for its hometown.
For the final part of your trip, we will take you to a place filled with tranquility where history and nature come together in beautiful harmony. First, visit Sarugajinja Shrine, surrounded by a beautiful pond filled with blooming lotus flowers. The serene grounds are the perfect place to calm your mind after the frenzy of the festival. Next, you will visit Seibien, a famous Japanese garden built during the Meiji era. Its unique design blends Japanese and Western aesthetics, creating a tranquil space where nature and architecture harmonise with the changing seasons.
At the end of your trip, we will drop you off at Aomori Airport or Shin-Aomori Station. These two days, filled with the excitement of the Nebuta Festival, the tranquility of Aomori, and the local culture and nature, will leave you with irreplaceable memories that will stay deep in your heart.
