A Guide to Fukuoka Castle Ruins

Fukuoka Castle Ruins

Hidden within Maizuru Park, the Fukuoka Castle Ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into Japan’s samurai past right in the heart of the city. While little remains of the original castle that once stood here, the surviving walls, foundations, and sweeping views still make this one of the most historic sites in Fukuoka.

A Brief History of Fukuoka Castle

Constructed in the early 17th century by Kuroda Nagamasa, the first lord of the Fukuoka domain, this castle once stood as the largest in Kyushu. The sprawling complex featured moats, turrets, and extensive grounds that reflected the power of the Kuroda clan. Although much of it was later dismantled, the site remains an important cultural landmark, preserving the atmosphere of Japan’s feudal era.

Exploring the Castle Grounds

Today, the ruins form part of the park, a favourite spot for locals and visitors. As you wander the grounds, you can walk along the remaining stone walls, climb to viewpoints for sweeping panoramas of Fukuoka, and picture the days when the castle stood as the center of power in the region.

Along the way, you can also explore the Korokan Guest House Ruins, which trace back to an ancient diplomatic facility, step inside the Tamon Turret, one of the few original structures still standing, and enjoy observation decks with views over the city and Hakata Bay.

The best time to visit is during the cherry blossom season in late March to early April, when the park transforms into one of the city’s most popular hanami (flower viewing) spots.

The Fukuoka Castle Ruins may be fragments of the past, but they remain one of the city’s must-see landmarks.
