Why Himeji Castle Is a Must-See on Your Japan Trip

Himeji Castle

Imagine a castle so elegant it looks like a white heron taking flight, set above the city in Hyogo with stacked roofs and white-plastered walls. That’s the first impression many travellers have when they step into the grounds of Himeji Castle. Planning your Kansai loop? Slot Himeji Castle into your itinerary as it belongs on every must-see list for Japan.

Widely regarded as the finest surviving example of early 17th century Japanese castle architecture, Himeji Castle’s complex remains remarkably intact. The main complex, completed in 1609, resulted from expansions across the 1500s and early 1600s. It survived fires, wars, Meiji era reforms, World War II and the Great Hanshin earthquake, a continuity that makes the castle an invaluable cultural record for Hyogo and Japan. It is protected as a Japanese National Treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Begin at Otemon Gate and step into the admission-free Sannomaru, the tertiary outer bailey. Visit in early April, when the wide lawn fills with cherry trees and becomes a picture-perfect spot for photos. Tickets for the main grounds are sold at the booth if you want to go inside.

Once inside the main keep, climb the narrow wooden staircases to the top for panoramic views of Himeji and the surrounding Hyogo landscape. Make sure your camera’s charged.

Not to be missed, Kokoen sits next to Himeji Castle and is made up of nine distinct walled gardens. Each section is modelled on a different Edo-period style, and the garden opened in 1992 to celebrate Himeji City’s 100th anniversary. Its seasonal beauty, including cherry blossoms in spring, maples turning deep red in autumn and irises in early summer, makes Kokoen a highlight to visit all year round.

Himeji Castle is more than a picture-perfect landmark. It is an intact piece of Japan’s past that combines striking architecture, layered history and easy access from nearby cities. Located in Hyogo and simple to reach from Osaka or Kobe, Himeji makes an ideal day trip on any Japan itinerary. Aim for spring or autumn for the best colours.
