If you are stopping by Hakata Station for some shopping, do not miss Tochoji Temple, located just a short walk from the station. One of Fukuoka’s landmarks, the temple houses a towering wooden Buddha and provides a chance to experience the city’s rich cultural heritage.

Founded in 806 by the renowned monk Kokai (Kobo Daishi), Tochoji Temple is considered the oldest Shingon Buddhist temple in Fukuoka. Shingon Buddhism is an esoteric school of Buddhism that emphasises ritual practices, meditation, and the use of symbols and mantras to attain enlightenment.

Step inside the temple hall to see the city’s largest seated wooden Buddha. Standing at over 10 metres tall, the statue feels both powerful and tranquil.

Beyond the main hall, take time to walk around the temple, where you can find a striking red pagoda that stands out against the surrounding cityscape, adding to the scenic view.

Each February, Tochoji Temple also hosts the Setsubun Festival, a seasonal event marking the arrival of spring. Take part in a lively bean-throwing ceremony, where figures such as the Seven Gods of Good Luck, Otafuku, and symbolic red and blue demons make appearances. The festival draws large crowds each year, as people gather to participate in rituals believed to bring good fortune and ward off misfortune.
