If you are chasing sunsets in Japan, few places rival the view at Sakurai Futamigaura’s Couple Stones in Fukuoka’s Itoshima area. Just about an hour’s drive from the city, this romantic seaside landmark features two sacred rocks linked by a shimenawa rope, a site that also carries deep cultural meaning as a symbol that celebrates marriage and unity. When evening falls, the Couple Stones stand out beautifully against the backdrop of the setting sun, making it one of the most breathtaking sights in Fukuoka.

Also known as Meoto Iwa, the Couple Stones represent husband and wife in Shinto tradition. Their connection by the shimenawa rope is honoured as a sign of love and commitment, and each year the rope is ceremonially replaced in a ritual that renews their sacred significance. For travellers, the sight of the rocks rising from the sea serves as a constant reminder of love.
Adding to the charm of Sakurai Futamigaura is the striking white torii gate that stands on the beach, perfectly framing the Couple Stones from the shore. It has become one of the most popular photo spots in Itoshima, especially during the evening glow. At low tide, visitors can even walk up to the gate, enjoying a closer look at the coastline and the Couple Stones.
