Discovering Mount Osore: A Quiet Day Trip in Aomori
Mount Osore in Aomori is known as one of Japan’s most sacred places. It sits in a volcanic area with white sand, hot springs, and a lake that changes colour depending on the light. We had heard about its beautiful scenery and decided to take a day trip to see it for ourselves.
The atmosphere is very different from the usual sightseeing spots. It feels quiet, open, and slightly otherworldly, almost as if time moves a little differently here. Visiting Mount Osore gives you a glimpse into a side of Japan that not many of us get to experience.
Here’s how our visit went.
Arriving at Mount Osore
When we reached Mount Osore, it felt like we had stepped into another world because the whole place was so calm and zen. Just past the entrance gate is the Sanzu River, which in Japanese Buddhism is believed to be the river that separates the living world from the afterlife.

The weather was good that day, and with the cool breeze, the area felt very peaceful and definitely Instagram-worthy.
There is also a clear lake that reflects the sky on sunny days. The water was calm, and the scenery made us slow down and take a moment to look around.

Exploring the Jigoku Meguri Path
Mount Osore has a walking trail called Jigoku Meguri, which allows visitors to explore the grounds at their own pace. The trail is easy to follow and takes you past small stone towers, colourful pinwheels placed as offerings, and natural steam vents from the volcanic activity underground. As you continue, you will also come across patches of sulphur rocks, quiet corners with Jizo statues (figures believed to protect children and travellers), and open areas where the landscape feels almost untouched.

It is not a long walk, but it gives you a good sense of the unique scenery here. We found ourselves stopping often to take photos and look around, as every turn offered a slightly different view of the volcanic landscape and the lake.

Final Thoughts
If you are planning a trip to Aomori, Mount Osore is worth a visit, especially if you enjoy slower and quieter places. It is easy to walk around and gives you a chance to see a side of Japan that feels very different from the cities. It is also far less crowded than many other attractions in Japan, which makes the experience even more relaxing.
