Fugen-in Temple Stay in Oma: Zen Meditation and Seasonal Cuisine in Aomori

We had always visited Japan’s busier cities like Tokyo and Osaka, but this time we wanted to experience a different side of the country, somewhere quieter and slower-paced. And I think we might have found just the place. Fugen-in Temple in Oma, Aomori offered exactly what we were looking for. Located at the northern tip of Honshu, it is known as Japan’s northernmost temple stay and welcomes only one group per night. There is also an interesting local custom where the temple plays soft music in the evenings, which people say helps keep bears away.

Here, time moves a little slower, giving you space to wind down, take in the coastal scenery, enjoy local cuisine, and join a morning Zen meditation. Here’s how our stay at Fugen-in Temple went.

Day 1

We arrived at Fugen-in Temple in the early evening. As we reached, we were greeted by a short flight of stairs and a red taiko bridge lit up in the night. Even though the temple is new, it still carries the feeling of a traditional place. The staff greeted us warmly before showing us to our room. From the window, we could see the surrounding hills and catch a hint of sea breeze, which gave the place an immediate sense of calm.

Dinner was served soon after. The meal featured seasonal local ingredients, each dish carefully prepared to bring out the best of what the region has to offer. On the menu were Oma tuna, matsutake mushroom soup, and local fish shabu-shabu. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and each dish had a clean, balanced taste. It was a simple yet satisfying meal.

Day 2

The next morning started at 6:30 a.m. with a Zen meditation session in the main hall. The sound of the temple bell marked the beginning, and we sat quietly facing the garden. Around us were only the sounds of the wind, birds, and rustling leaves.

The session was short but calming, a quiet moment that we do not often get in daily life. It was a refreshing way to start the day.

Final Thoughts

Our stay at Fugen-in Temple was short but meaningful. The warm hospitality, seasonal food, and quiet morning meditation made it a peaceful experience from start to finish. It is a simple and comfortable stay that lets you slow down and take a break from the rush of everyday life.

If you are visiting Aomori or exploring the Tohoku region, spending a night at Fugen-in in Oma is definitely worth it.
